Overcoming Negative Thoughts

Hi Reader,

Have you ever noticed that telling yourself to "think positive" rarely changes how you actually feel?

If you're struggling with thoughts like, "I'm not good enough," or "Nothing is going to work out," you've probably noticed how trying to replace them with clichéd affirmations usually doesn't help.

Why?

Because your mind knows you don't believe it.

Most approaches to positive thinking ask us to deny what we're experiencing.

Yoga wisdom takes a different approach.

The Yoga Sutras teach a practice called pratipakṣa-bhāvanam—cultivating a counteracting thought. But this doesn't mean covering negative thoughts with forced optimism. It means learning to recognize the mistaken assumptions hidden inside many of those thoughts and replacing them with something that is both truthful and uplifting.

In other words, yoga isn't asking us to fool ourselves; it's teaching us how to think more wisely.

In my upcoming live online workshop, we'll explore this remarkable practice together. You'll learn practical tools you can use in your own life and, if you're a yoga teacher, ways to help your students work more skillfully with negative thinking as well.

Greetings Reader, A few weeks ago I spent the better part of an idyllic afternoon hanging out with a friend on a quiet veranda overlooking a stretch of woods behind my apartment complex. Our meeting was both pleasant and purposeful: our plan was to explore some ideas about how we could expand our support for the Free DC movement here in our besieged capital. But before we got down to the business of resistance, we took some time to catch up. I mentioned that my wife and I are planning a trip...

Greetings Reader, I have not forgiven Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz for torpedoing Senator Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign when she was the Chairperson of the Democratic National Committee during the run up to the 2016 elections. The results speak for themselves. And I haven’t forgiven former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg for his handling of the NYPD’s dishonest tactics and illegal mass detentions of nearly 2,000 protestors during the Republican National Convention in...

Greetings Reader, I’ve gotten used to a lot of the great things that go with living in my adopted hometown of Washington, D.C.: being able to see 360 degrees of sky from almost anywhere in town, being able to go for a walk in the woods without leaving the city’s limits, great Ethiopian restaurants, fantastic art collections at DC’s museums, many of which offer free admission, . . . I’ve also gotten used to living in a town that attracts idealistic transplants who come to our nation's capital...
