Our next FREE Community Conversation

Greetings Reader -

Our free monthly series, Community Conversations, continues next week.

This month we're going to explore the relationship between technology, AI, and Yoga.

Smart mats are here, with embedded pressure sensors that your track balance and flexibility and evaluate your pose alignment via a mobile device.

Smart yoga clothes are here, too. Now you don’t have to worry about getting into proper alignment; your clothes will get you into it for you.

How far away are we from AI gurus and cranial implants that feed “enlightenment” impulses into our brains?

Not very far according to some futurists. With so much tech already established and plenty more on the way, it’s worth considering how the explosion of tech and AI in the yoga market will influence the evolution of yoga.

How does technology mediate the experience of yoga and yoga culture? Do we want our yoga practice to be a mediated experience (the same way we go to a live concert and watch the performance through our phones)? How is tech’s incursion into spiritual spaces changing what we think it means to be human? Or what we think spirituality is? When we’re suited up with sensors giving non-stop hands-on assists, are we doing yoga or is yoga being done to us? Does “yoga optimization” mean having a way to get the benefits of yoga without actually having to do yoga?

Together, we'll explore these and other related questions in our next

Greetings Reader, A few weeks ago I spent the better part of an idyllic afternoon hanging out with a friend on a quiet veranda overlooking a stretch of woods behind my apartment complex. Our meeting was both pleasant and purposeful: our plan was to explore some ideas about how we could expand our support for the Free DC movement here in our besieged capital. But before we got down to the business of resistance, we took some time to catch up. I mentioned that my wife and I are planning a trip...

Greetings Reader, I have not forgiven Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz for torpedoing Senator Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign when she was the Chairperson of the Democratic National Committee during the run up to the 2016 elections. The results speak for themselves. And I haven’t forgiven former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg for his handling of the NYPD’s dishonest tactics and illegal mass detentions of nearly 2,000 protestors during the Republican National Convention in...

Greetings Reader, I’ve gotten used to a lot of the great things that go with living in my adopted hometown of Washington, D.C.: being able to see 360 degrees of sky from almost anywhere in town, being able to go for a walk in the woods without leaving the city’s limits, great Ethiopian restaurants, fantastic art collections at DC’s museums, many of which offer free admission, . . . I’ve also gotten used to living in a town that attracts idealistic transplants who come to our nation's capital...
