Greetings Reader - Our free monthly series, Community Conversations, continues next week. This month, by popular request, we’re going to talk about "Deficit Thinking." "Deficit thinking" is a trend in Westernized yoga that frames our various shortcomings – spiritual and physical – as a personal lacking that we actively choose to continue, that poor health, disability, or other less than ideal circumstances are character flaws that are entirely within our control to change rather than being subject to life circumstances outside of our control. We'll look at what yoga philosophy has to say about "deficit thinking," including how the idea of karma—the idea that past actions have the power to shape our future experiences—can complicate our perception and response to health issues and personal challenges, how the MAHA movement's emphasis on individual autonomy and self-trust can be co-opted to justify distrust in authoritative sources of knowledge, and how accessible yoga practices have evolved over the past decade to prioritize student well-being over rigid physical expectations. I hope you'll join us for our next COMMUNITY CONVERSATION a free monthly study group Live via Zoom @ 12:00 pm Eastern Time NEXT CONVERSATION: Wednesday, August 13, 2025 TOPIC: "DEFICIT THINKING" Registration is free – CLICK HERE to get updates and the Zoom link! Greetings Reader - Today, August 24th, is a noteworthy day on the calendar. Here in the United States, it’s National Waffle Day! Woo-hoo — break out the waffle iron! More significantly, it’s Independence Day in Ukraine, a day I hope Ukranians will continue to celebrate for many years to come.
